A very quick and easy playdough recipe. It saves on money & you can make any colour you want! No weighing in this recipe. All cup measurements to reduce faff! There are lots of recipes out there both cook and non-cook but this one has been tried and tested time and time again and gets results every time.
What you will need
2 cups of plain flour
2 cups of warm water
1 cup of salt
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
2 tablespoons of cream of tartar
Food colouring and scented oils/essence of your choice
Steps
1. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients together (except the food colouring) and stir over a low heat. The dough will begin to thicken until it resembles mashed potato. When the dough pulls away from the sides and clumps in the center, remove the pan from the heat and allow to cool enough to handle the dough.
2. Knead the dough until smooth and divide into balls for colouring.
3. Make a pit in the center of each ball with your thumb and drop in some food colouring. (I used gels which always achieve a vibrant colour and do not effect the consistency of the dough like others). Fold the dough over and work the food colouring through.
Your dough is ready to play with. It is totally non-toxic and is kid-safe, just a bit salty!
Store in an airtight container or well wrapped in cling film.
If it gets dry, add a little water and knead through. If it gets soggy, reheat it until gone.
You can also bake it in the oven to make hard figures/ornaments and paint them.
These are particularly good when scented too. I used just vanilla essence this time but you can literally use anything and is really good if you use ones relevant to the colours like orange (for orange!), lemon for yellow, lime for green, peppermint for blue and so on.
Just don't do what I did for my last Ofsted inspection, bought orange flavouring and decided to try it first (thank god) and it had alcohol in it!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe sometimes add glitter to make 'disco' play dough! I always think it's a much better consistency than the shop bought stuff !
